Durian Chocolate, Kaya Chocolate And Our Other Local Flavours
Durian chocolate sounds like a novelty until you eat a good one. We have been making local-flavour chocolate in Singapore since 2005, and some of these flavours did not exist anywhere before we made them. The Signature Kaya bar is ours. So is the mahjong box. They both came out of the same question. What would chocolate taste like if it were built from the food we grew up eating?
The Signature Kaya chocolate bar we created
Kaya is coconut and pandan jam, the thing on your toast at breakfast. Putting it inside a chocolate bar took a long time to get right, because kaya is wet and chocolate does not forgive moisture. We got there, and the Signature Kaya bar has been in the range ever since.
There is also a Kaya Pandan piece in the fresh chocolate range, and a Merlion Kaya bar in souvenir packaging for people taking it out of the country.
Durian chocolate, made with real durian
Durian is the King of Fruits here, and a flavour people feel strongly about. Our durian chocolate is made with real durian, so what you taste is the fruit itself rather than an imitation of it. If you love durian, you will know it straight away.
The original Mahjong chocolate in Singapore
Chocolate mahjong tiles, boxed like a set. We have been making them since 2009, which makes us the first makers of Singapore Mahjong Chocolate, and they still turn up at Chinese New Year gatherings and in luggage heading overseas. Boxes come in 10, 15, 25 and 50 piece sizes, and there is an I LOVE YOU edition for Valentine’s Day.
Kopi, ondeh ondeh and the rest of the local range
Beyond the three headliners the local range keeps going, with Kopi Siu Dai for people who take their coffee less sweet, Ondeh Melaka with gula melaka, Bandung Rose, Orchid, and a Merlion series in cashew, mango, rose coconut, white coffee and Singapore Sling.
The Merlion bars exist mainly because visitors kept asking for something to take home that was actually made here.
Availability is shown on each product page. The fresh range sells out more often than the bars do. Orders are delivered islandwide, with your preferred date chosen at checkout, or you are welcome to collect at the cafe in Chinatown.
Why a Singapore chocolatier makes these at all
CHOCOELF was started in 2005 by a doctor and a chocolatier with decades of experience in five-star hotels. The local flavours came from the chocolatier’s side of that partnership, and the no-sugar-added work from the doctor’s. Several of the local bars are made with no sugar added for exactly that reason.
If you are assembling a gift rather than buying for yourself, the local bars sit well in a mixed box, and they are the ones that get asked about.
